Splicing a loop on the front of a flyline By Justin Duggan
This is a secure and easy method of placing a braided loop on the front of a flyline. Braided loops allow for quick leader changes and are very strong. They are however less abrasion resistant than using a nail knot.
You will need; - hollow braided mono , 50 pound for 7wt and above, 35pound for below 7wt's. - bobbin and thread (kevlar or strong waxed nylon) - long piece of doubled 50 pound single strand wire - pliobond or other flexible adhesive
Start by cutting the desired length of hollow braid. The flyline needs to extend no less than 6inches into the splice Since the splice is to be doubled you will need to cut a minimum 14 inches of hollow braid. 12 for the doubled section where the flyline is inserted and around 2 inches to form the loop in the end.
Now start by inserting the doubled wire at least 6 inches into the hollow braid.
Pass the wire out the side of the hollow braid
insert the tag of the braid into the wire as shown.
Now pull the wire back from whence it came. This should pull the tag through and out the bottom of the braid forming a loop like the one pictured. NOTE- be careful not to pull too far or the loop will close. If it looks like closing, insert a pen into the loop and continue pulling the tag through.
place a slim, smooth object such as a pen or bobbin into the loop and peel the outer layer of the splice back a little way.
insert the flyline into the end of the splice and inch it up. As you progress you will be peeling the outer layer back until you cannot progress any further.
Now slide the outer layer of the splice back and gently manipulate the loop back open. The frayed ends of the splice should now match up. If not then carefully trim them a little to suit.
Now whip finish the frayed ends of the loop and coat the whip finish with pliobond or similar flexible adhesive like Tarzans grip.
The loop is now complete. If done correctly the flyline will be a minimum of 6 inches inside the splice and the loop will be around 1-2 inches long.
