How to tie saltwater flies and leaders

Squid Fly
By Stuart Tremain
Sydney Kingfish

This fly is my variation on some of the different squid flies that I have used over the years. I have stuck with all white but use your imagination and chose a colour scheme that works for you.

This first step requires some STIFF mono tightly strung between two vises, I have used Rod Harrison's Hard Alloy 10kg. Lay down about 15mm of white thread and then tie in 4 saddle hackles at 90 degrees to each other. My preference is to tie tham with the curve out as they will spring into this position when the fly comes to rest, providing some extra movement.

You can tie a few on the one piece of mono and cut them up later.

Using a Tiemco 911s #2 lay down thread from eye to just past the point.

Now tie in the group of feathers, they can be set right back on the hook.

Snip off the excess mono

Tie in some chenille at the eye and wrap it back to the beginning of the feathers

And then back to the eye again and tie off

Glue on some eyes, remember squid have big ones. Use some Tarzan's Grip as you will need some body to the glue to get in amongst the chenille

This can be tricky, so patience is required. Cut a bunch of Polar Fibre and lay it over the fly with about 5mm past the eye, put a LARGE LOSE wrap arond the Polar Fibre and pull it tight, tie it in well and whip finish
